sarah-jane & ben – 26.09.09 – highlights

-

With Sarah-Jane & Ben a good time was guaranteed.
Sarah-Jane & Ben met on the set of The Bill where Ben was playing a character named… Ben!
Fast forward a few years and here we are at the stunning St Uny Parish Church, Lelant.
Clear blue skies, not a cloud in the sky… perfect.

It was clear from the word go that Sarah-Jane and Ben weren’t going to be shy in front of the camera, which made our job a whole lot easier.
After a moving service by The Rev. John Holland, the couple exit to what else but “Carry On Loving” by the great Eric Rogers, (if you’re not from the UK this will probably mean nothing).
The Pedn Olva Hotel in St.Ives was the venue for the reception, and with it’s stunning views it was the perfect choice.
The evening kicked off with the mind-baffling skills of magician Ed Clarke, and then really got going with an amazing first dance.
The photography duties were taken care of by John & Mag of John Miles Photography. Both were a pleasure to work with and they produced some great shots.

Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Peyton on a great wedding.

niki & justin – 29.08.09 – extended highlights

-

We decided to try something a little different with Niki & Justin’s highlights.
At 14 minutes long it’s a complete film in itself and being narrative driven really captures the emotion of the day.

The service was held at Camborne Church, with the reception at the Falmouth Beach Hotel.
With Gyllyngvase beach just across the road and the sun shining, it was shoes off, trousers rolled up and off we went.
Niki & Justin are a great couple who were really up for it and took great joy in showing another newly married couple being photographed on the beach how it should be done.
Add in some doves, a fly by message and a magician, this day had it all.
Aside from Justin’s mishap with his contact lens everyone got on the dance floor to party the night away.

It was a great day, thank you Niki & Justin for letting us be part of it.

PS. only the Cornish out there will appreciate the Flambards joke.

the ring

Angela Desveaux, Editor-In-Chief at Canada’s luxury wedding magazine WedLuxe recently posted a moving and emotional story on her blog about the symbolism of a wedding ring.

Please take the time to read it here, but be warned have a tissue handy.

trereife house and the ever popular dee & gerard

For some reason Dee & Grerad’s highlight clip is proving to be very popular.

When we heard that Trereife House were updating their website, we were very keen for them to take advantage of Dee & Gerard’s highlight clip in an effort to show off this stunning venue.
We are glad to say that they jumped at the chance and the clip is getting lots of viewings.

This really is something that more venues should take advantage of.
Most venues have stills to show off a wedding or event but not many are seeing the advantages of using video clips on their websites.

Anyway, for those that haven’t seen Dee & Gerard’s highlight yet, enjoy.

Thanks to Kat from the amazing Rock ‘n’ Roll Bride for having Dee & Gerards highlights as a “Thursday Treat”

calling yourself a filmmaker is pretentious

International award winning wedding filmmaker Andrew Hsu of Studio MSV based in California, was asked whether he thought calling himself a “filmmaker” made him pretentious.

With his response he could have been reading our minds:

“It’s not so much “pretentious” as it is a possible misnomer; considering the fact that we don’t make feature films, nor do we regularly shoot on film (although I do offer Super 8mm services.)
But is it pretentious? If I consider “filmmaker” a term of much higher esteem than what I deserve, then, yes, maybe. But I think the term “videographer” far underrates what a good event filmmaker can produce these days.
Other terms, like “cinematographer” are also not descriptive enough because half of what I do is editing and story-telling, not just shooting.

I don’t really ascribe more worth to myself than I deserve, but for sure the term “filmmaker” describes what I do better than any other term I can think of.”

He was also asked what he had for breakfast that morning, but we won’t go into that.

tiffany & nathan – 31.10.09 – coming soon teaser

With Tiffany and Nathan things were going to be a little different.
For starters they were getting married in a cave… who in their right mind gets married in a cave?

Carnglaze Caverns is a little bit more than a cave. It was originally part of an old slate mine and was used to store the Royal Navy’s supply of rum during the Second World War.
But what a venue for a wedding, and for any bride wanting to make an entrance, the aisle is nearly 80m long.

From the wrestling style soundtrack announcing the Groom and his Groomsmen through to the Masked Ball at the Falcon Hotel in Bude, it was a great day with loads of personal touches.

It was certainly dark in the caverns, but the photo shoot down by the underground lake was a real test for both Phil from Phil Glew Photography and ourselves.

It’s probably best that we don’t mention the part when on mass the men in traditional Cornish tartan kilts decided to answer the question “what does a man wear under his kilt?”.

…moving swiftly on, here is their little coming soon teaser.

charlotte & Noah – 27.11.09 – coming soon teaser

The end of November saw us traveling up to the amazing Clearwell Castle in the Forest of Dean for the wedding of Charlotte & Noah.

As you can tell by this little teaser, Charlotte & Noah chose to have some Super 8 footage mixed in throughout the day.
I’ve said it before but the Super 8 look is just something that you can’t fake in the post production process.

Once again I was joined by the guys from Christian Michael who were there to capture the photography side of things.
Their blog entry of the day can be seen here.
The guys were also kind enough to let me have a play with one of their Canon 5D MkII cameras, which now has the ability to capture some amazing video footage. The results are pretty amazing and can’t wait to get my hands on one.

Anyway, an amazing day was had by all.
From the emotional service, the emotional speeches, some great Diary Room messages and fireworks in the rain we had it all.

This little teaser shows of a bit of the Super 8 footage from the day.

sophie & scott coming soon teaser sets new record…

…well for Memories On Film anyway.
Yes, Sophie & Scotts teaser now holds the record for the most people watching their clip in a 24hr period with 104 views.
We’re not talking millions here but for us 104 is a lot of people, and it goes to show just how many people are watching video clips on their computers via the internet.

sophie & scott – 26.12.09 – coming soon teaser

Who gets married on Boxing Day?
Well, Sophie & Scott for one, and what a great day they picked.
We dodged the rain all day but when the sun did come out is was a perfect crisp winters day.
The ceremony was held at St. Stephens Church, Saltash with the reception at the rather swanky St. Mellion International Resort.

First surprise of the day went to Sophies parents who had arranged an amazing glass horse drawn carriage for Sophies journey to and from the church, but the second surprise definitely went to Sophie who had compiled a lovely montage of old video clips of her dad and her as a child which was played as a backdrop as the two had a dance… not a dry eye in the house.

Photography duties were taken on by the guys at Christian Michael (i’m sure they’re stalking me) who did an amazing job as usual.

Watching back the footage to put together this teaser there have been two highlight clips so far, the first is the look Sophie gives Scott during the service (which can be seen in the clip) the second you’ll have to wait for, but involves the Diary Room and a rather unglamorous forward roll… you know who you are!

Anyway, a short teaser of Sophie & Scotts big day.

a merry lo-fi christmas…

Sticking with the Super 8 theme, Father Christmas was kind enough to drop a Digital Harinezumi down my chimney.
This tiny digital camera (that also shoots video) produces some amazing Lo-Fi over saturated pictures very similar to the old Russian Lomo cameras.

These are a few test shots taken in St.Ives over Christmas.

they don’t make ‘em like they used to…

Still going strong and looking good after 30 years.

Many consider the Canon 814 XL to be among the best Super 8 cameras ever made. Introduced in 1979, it was one of the final top-end cameras marketed by Canon before the market shifted to video in the early 1980s.

Now back in action, this camera has seen a lot of recent wedding action and is proving very popular with couples wanting a film that’s a little bit different.

Super 8 footage adds a certain something to a film when cut in with the usual super crisp and clear HD shots.
Many people try and fake the Super 8 look in Post Production, but usually end up with footage that just doesn’t look right.

There is only on way to get that great Super 8 look… and that’s by shooting Super 8.

As far as i’m aware we are the only company in the South West (and one of only a handful in the country) shooting Super 8 at weddings.
I suppose I should be keeping it a secret but to us it looks great and is an exciting format to work with.
Just don’t tell everyone.

Andy - Nice super 8 footage, was that 64t?. BTW, Canon 814xl introduced 1977-79. Canon 814xl-s introduced 1979-1984 ish, purchased my 814xl-s new in 1985, and still going strong, its seen out video8, Hi8 and mini DV, lol. Happy New Year..

January 4, 2010 - 9:24 pm

admin - Thanks – Yes all 64T.
Just got my first roll of low light TRI-X B&W back from being processed, looks great.
Still not sure about keeping the original 4:3 frame size or stretching it to fit 16:9…

January 5, 2010 - 8:28 pm

Andy - personally i prefer the 4-3 image, with black borders either side. Great to see super 8 becoming more common in the uk wedding scene….

carbonated heaven

Not a mention of a wedding anywhere, but still this guy is amazing, obsessive and inspirational.
Just goes to show that there is life without big corporate brands.
250 different drinks and not a Coke or Pepsi in sight.
